Accreditation Echocardiography in Ireland

1 October 2009

Dear colleague

The Irish Cardiac Echo and Imaging Group (ICE) was formed in 2006 to promote the study and advancement of ultrasound imaging in cardiology. It represents the interests of all those who work in or who are associated with cardiac imaging, in particular echocardiography.

ICE has a major interest in improving the standards of echocardiography in Ireland through education and training. By establishing a standard and by inviting practitioners to seek accreditation to this standard we hope to encourage and maintain practical training and learning in the performance and reporting of echocardiograms.

Accreditation will set a standard that will benefit your patients, your colleagues and your employers. It will also give you an internationally recognised credential.

Initially we are asking that all practitioners in echocardiography to register with ICE. This will give us the opportunity to assess current levels of accreditation and work practices. We will review this information and develop a strategy for setting standards and supporting practitioners in achieving this standard.

For cardiac physiologists, accreditation will be a vital part of the bid for state registration and recognition of the profession. It will become increasingly important in the achievement of the required competencies in the Cardiology SpR curriculum. For other practitioners it will provide recognition of knowledge and skills.

Accreditation is, at the moment, voluntary. However in the future we would envisage that this will probably change and it will become a requirement to show competency. Voluntary accreditation now allows our profession to set the agenda in any future regulation.

Dr Angie Brown MD
President ICE
